Linney was first seen on Broadway in 1990, and has since earned Tony Award nominations, including the 2002 revival of The Crucible The original Sight Unseen Broadway performances (2004), Time Stands Still (2009) The Musical (2007), My Name Is Lucy Barton (2017) along with new revivals for The Little Foxes (2017). The year 2001 saw Linney win her first Emmy Award she ever received for her film on television Wild Iris. Other wins were followed by television sitcom Frasier from 2003 to 2004 and the miniseries John Adams in 2008. In 2010, she starred as a character in The Big C on Showtime and was awarded the fourth Emmy Award in 2013, while from 2017-2022 she will be starring on Netflix's crime-themed series Ozark.
